As a trained Midwife and having studied advanced shiatsu for pregnancy with Suzanne Yates, Author and Shiatsu Practitioner ( Babymother well UK) I have found, Shiatsu by its very essence enables moms-to-be feel more connected with their own energy and during pregnancy with the energy of their baby, in a very direct and accessible way. In this sense it can be one of the most powerful therapies for women and their partners at this time.
The underlying knowledge of all my work with pregnant women is that ultimately they know their bodies and babies better than anyone else
Shiatsu therapy can help reduce many of the problems associated with pregnancy.
Benefits include:
Safety issues
Since shiatsu is about rebalancing the bodies own energy system it is not invasive and there is no evidence of any side effects and much evidence of its effectiveness during pregnancy
Should pregnant women suffer from complications such as high blood pressure, infection, inflammation, pre-eclampsia, throbosis, varicose veins Shiatsu may still be performed in conjunction with western medical treatment.
Rates per session
Sessions offered are 60 -90 minutes and is done using a shiatsu mat and pilates ball on the floor.
You remain fully clothed and no oils are used.
Treatment during session various depending on pregnancy and any related complications
Sessions includes acupressure massage, stretches, relaxation ands visualisations to connect with your baby
A weekly Shiatsu massage can mean the difference between being an uncomfortable pregnant person and being quite comfortable and really enjoy your pregnancy. Shiatsu can also help reduce e nausea often associated with the first months of pregnancy, which can be a lifesaver for those who suffer.
Note:
While you must be careful not to stimulate the uterus too much during pregnancy, some techniques I show you can come in very handy during labor or once the due date has been passed and the mother would like labor to start. Employing these techniques during or before labor can help speed up the process, intensifying uterine contractions. Shiatsu massage can also help a woman be more comfortable throughout the labor process.
FYI:
After delivery it was customary for Japanese women to rest for two weeks in bed to avoid exhaustion and depression. After the two weeks passed, women would begin Shiatsu therapy again to help bring the muscles to life, and help the now nursing and caring mother recover more quickly. Many mothers today find that Shiatsu is just what they need to get back in shape and be the best mother possible.
